The Border Roads Organization (BRO) was founded on May 7, 1960. To enhance border connectivity, the BRO was fully transferred to the Ministry of Defence in 2015. It is tasked with maintaining the road network in India’s border regions.

Lieutenant General Raghu Srinivasan took over as the 28th Director General of the Border Roads Organisation (DGBR) on September 30, 2023, succeeding Lieutenant General Rajiv Chaudhary, who retired. Before this role, Lieutenant General Srinivasan served as the Commandant of the College of Military Engineering in Pune.
